Introduction American Samoa, a U.S. territory, comprises seven volcanic islands in the South Pacific Ocean 4700 km (2600 miles) southwest of Hawaii.
Tutuila Island accounts for 74% of the total area of 197 sq km (76.1 sq mi) and 97% of the 60,000 population, which grows at an average rate of 3.7%. The climate is humid tropical with little seasonal variation in temperature and an average annual rainfall of 3500 mm, generally from November to April.
