Sunn Hemp Cover Crop Workshop and Waimanalo Open House Sneak Preview

Want to find an organic tool that can combat multiple pests on-farm? Want to get a sneak preview of vegetable variety and organic amendment trials? We are organizing a workshop on the benefits of sunn hemp cover cropping for soil health management and weed suppression. We will also present results of recently completed and on-going vegetable variety and fertilizer trials. Impacts of sunn hemp cover cropping on several vegetable agroecosystems will be presented by Dr. Koon-Hui Wang. Integration of sunn hemp cover cropping with other non-chemical practices for pests and pathogens management will also be shown. Audience will be tour to sunn hemp field plots by Dr. James Leary to observe sunn hemp stands and its potential for weed suppression. Attendees will have an opportunity to view vegetable variety trials and organic fertilizer research by Dr. Ted Radovich and students prior to the University of Hawaii Annual Waimanalo Field Day Event.

Strategic Planning for HI sustainable agriculture for the next Twenty

Western SARE’s third subregional conference, in Kona, Hawaii, drew nearly 120 farmers, ranchers and ag support people to the Outrigger Kona Resort Hotel. Participants at the gathering, Sept. 23-24, 2008, learned about Western SARE and agricultural sustainability. And they discussed the key issues related to the future of agriculture in Hawaii and expressed what they perceived to be the critical needs and issues facing Hawaii.
