Hawaii Forestry Extension serves as a rich clearinghouse of information about tropical forestry in Hawai‘i. Be sure to check the Agroforestry Links section to quickly locate information about topics ranging from tree species and seed sources to cost share programs. Hawaii Forestry and Agroforestry Trees is another useful CTAHR link as well.
The Tropical Forestry and Agroforestry Laboratory at CTAHR does research and analysis of productive and sustainable forestry and agroforestry systems in Hawaii and the Pacific.
The USDA National Agroforestry Center, located at the University of Nebraska, and the Association for Temperate Agroforestry, located at the University of Missouri, focus on agroforestry systems for developed countries in temperate regions, particularly windbreaks, silvo-pastoral systems, riparian buffer zones, and alley cropping systems.
The Forest, Farm, and Community Tree Network (FACTnet), formerly the Nitrogen Fixing Tree Association, publishes fact sheets on over 80 multi-purpose trees and leaflets on agroforestry for the Pacific Islands. While FACTnet has ceased active operations, Winrock International will be maintaining the web site.
The World Agrofrestry Centre (formerly the International Center for Research in Agroforestry ICRAF), located in Kenya and Indonesia, performs research and develops agroforestry technologies for use in the tropics worldwide. The website features informational articles and slide shows on agroforestry and access to the Agroforestree Database and the Tree Seed Suppiers' Directory.
Agroforestry.net, a non-profit organization located in Holualoa, Hawaii, produced an introductory publication, “Agroforestry Guides for Pacific Islands” which is available as a series of downloadable Adobe Acrobat documents or can be purchased. Check their website for additional downloadable publications about agroforestry.
The Overstory (international journal for agroforestry): The Overstory is a free e-mail agroforestry journal for practitioners, researchers, and professionals.
Check the Traditional Tree Initiative website for Species Profiles for Pacific Island Agroforestry 2003-2005, available on-line.
The Hawaii Forest Industry Association is the industry trade association for the state, and promotes forestry through education, planning, information exchange, marketing, and advocacy. HFIA’s website has information about training programs, marketing Hawaii woods, and reports on the wood industry.
Agroforestry Systems is a peer-reviewed scientific journal reporting on the latest research and developments in agroforestry around the world.
World Congress of Agroforestry Conference websites have information posted from conference sessions, blogs, etc.
