Instructions for Preparing Abstracts

An abstract submission is required for both oral and poster presentations. Abstracts should be informative and have the following parts:
a)  title;
b)  list of authors and department affiliations (all abstracts must list a CTAHR or CAFNRM faculty member as one of the authors);
c)  objectives;
d)  methods, if pertinent;
e)  results;
f)  conclusions; and
g)  impact and significance.
All data must be in the metric system. Do not use phrases such as "will be discussed" or "will be presented." Do not include any graphs or tables in your abstract.

Abstracts will be accepted only in electronic format. No hardcopies will be accepted. Abstracts must be saved and submitted in one of the following formats:  Microsoft Word or RTF. Check spelling and grammar before submitting the abstract.

The entire abstract, including title, authors, and department affiliations, must be typed, single-spaced, using Times Roman font in 12-point size. Bold the title, authors, and department affiliations. If there are multiple authors, place an asterisk (*) after the name of the presenting author.

Following these instructions is an abstract size template. All text must fit within the template rectangle, which is 6.5 inches wide x 4.5 inches tall (16.5 cm x 11.4 cm). This is approximately 1,700 characters. Set your word processor margins to create a rectangle of the correct size. You should set your word processor to top/bottom margins of 3.25 inches and left/right margins of 1 inch for a standard 8.5 inch x 11-inch size paper. For special symbols and equations, use a word processor with an equation editor and special symbols.

When using abbreviations or acronyms, spell them out fully followed by the abbreviation in parentheses at the first mention of them in the text, for example, Taxation Rate (TR). Use the abbreviation or acronym thereafter.

Have your advisor proofread your abstract. No editing of your abstract will be done once it is submitted. Additional Abstract Submission Forms and this instruction sheet may be obtained from CTAHR’s Office of Academic and Student Affairs, Gilmore 211.

Abstracts will be printed in the symposium program, which will be available at the symposium and in electronic form on the Internet. Only abstracts received by March 6, 2009 will appear in the printed symposium program.

The original Abstract Submission Form (hardcopy) and the abstract (on diskette or e-mailed) must be received by March 6, 2009. Send them to:

If your abstract and abstract submission form for an oral presentation is received after the submission deadline (March 6, 2009), you will be placed in the poster session on a space available basis. Although we will make every attempt to honor your requests for presentations, there is a limited number of time slots for oral presentations. If the number of requests for oral presentations exceeds the number that can be accommodated, some of the authors will be asked to present a poster instead.  Late abstracts (oral and poster) will not be included in the printed symposium program.

Cloning and characterization of flower development genes in papaya. Qingyi Yu*, Paul H. Moore, and Ray Ming. Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering.
Instability of papaya flowers, revealed by environmentally influenced sex reversal and stamen carpellody, results in malformed fruit that is unmarketable. Based on knowledge of flower development in the model plants Antirrhirum and Arabidopsis, we are . . . . .
