Welcome to the Watershed Demonstration Project Homepage!
|
This page is designed to provide background information on the project titled Watershed Management to Protect Coastal Areas of Hawaii, and to serve as a resource for students and community members interested in watershed management.
This is a three-year project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The project is a partnership between the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM); University of Hawaii Hawaiian Internship Program (UHHIP); State of Hawaii , Department of Health Environmental Planning Office (DOH); and the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service (FS). The goal of the project is to involve undergraduate students in all aspects of a watershed-based approach to coastal water quality management.
This is a collaborative, multidisciplinary, hands-on training exercise in water quality science, environmental planning, and economic evaluation. Students learn the methodology used by the State of Hawaii Department of Health Total Maximum Daily Load Program for water quality management at field sites on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii . The students are also encouraged to learn socially-acceptable and environmentally-appropriate methods of community development for a more holistic approach to watershed management.
