Background/
Overview: |
Soil erosion is the most pronounced threat in the Moomomi Watershed
project area. High winds, heavy seasonal rainfall, grazing by livestock,
and the climatic situation have historically contributed to the
problem. Sediments from the erosion has reached the north shore
ocean waters as evidenced by many visiting the area after significant
rains. |
| Objectives/Goals: |
To control and reduce soil erosion, prevent and reduce sediments
reaching the ocean waters, and to stabilize critical areas. |
| Methods Employed: |
A conservation plan was developed as a framework for implementation
of conservation measures to address the project purpose and goals.
The conservation plan was used as a tool to assist the land user
to better manage the area of land use. Access to a road was closed
and a new access was created to a beach. Three water diversions
were installed and planted with ground cover. This resulted in
considerably noticeable and cleaner waters. Weeding, planting,
and general maintenance to the new access road and diversions was
conducted by project volunteers. Educational outreach efforts were
successful in generating community-wide support for this and other
projects being conducted within Moomomi Watershed. Appropriate
signage along the project helped visitors to the area be aware
of the project activities. Copies of a brochure were sent out to
over 400 homestead and community members to promote more awareness
of this project and the nonpoint source pollution problems on Molokai. |
