This program is administered at the state level by the Office of Hawaii Child Nutrition Programs who coordinates the National School Lunch Program here in Hawaii. This program provides children in participating schools with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetable samples throughout the day in an effort to:
- provide healthier food choices
- expand the variety of fruits and vegetables that children get to experience
- help increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables
The Nutrition Education for Wellness Program collaborated with the Office of Hawaii Child Nutrition Programs to create a quick and easy nutrition activity called, "It All Starts with Agriculture — Fruit & Veggie Matching Card Game" that can be integrated in with the sampling of the fresh fruits and vegetables.
By reviewing the fruits and veggies with their matching plants, children will learn that the fruits and veggies they eat actually come from plants.
