Horticulture Digest #101
LANDSCAPE WORKERS

A recent publication, "Employment Outlook for Industries and Occupations: 1992 to 1997" by the Hawai'i State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations has some interesting information regarding the Green Industry in Hawai'i. One of the occupation titl es under agriculture is "Gardeners and Groundskeepers" with a total of 4,440 employed for 1992 ( Table 1). They also project this to increase to 4,720 by 1997, or a 6.3 percent increase in the next 5 years. This increase is expected on all Islands, with ne arly a 10% increase on Kauai, followed by smaller increases on Maui, Hawai'i and Oahu ( Table 1). These figures do not include management and supervisory personnel. This suggest that there is a tremendous need for training programs for this very important segment of the Green Industry.
