Certification: 40 hours of volunteer work are necessary for initial Master Gardener certification, generally 20 on the helpline or at community outreach events plus 20 other hours—which can be obtained in a variety of approved ways, including work at our Demonstration Garden and community projects at Amy Greenwell, Kona Outdoor Circle, etc. Your 40 hours must be completed within 1 year of completing the U.H. Master Gardener course. When you have 40 hours, send the completed form to Charlie.

Recertification will require 30 hours. Excessive travel time will be considered as part of recertification on an individual basis. Each recertification period is for the fiscal year; that is, July 1st through June 30th each year. When you have 30 hours, send the completed form to Charlie.

Emeritus MG

After five years as a certified Master Gardener, an individual may become an emeritus MG without additional hours.
