top- How can I reduce the amount of fat in my diet?

It is sometimes difficult to determine what types of foods are high in fat. Some foods are naturally higher in fat but the presence of fat isn't always easily noticeable. These foods include some meats, some dairy products and nuts. Often times, gravies and sauces are prepared with a lot of butter or margarine and are usually high in fat. We do need some fats in our diets. These essential fats can be found in fish, shellfish, and some vegetable oils, such as canola oil. Reducing the amount of fat in your diet is an important component of a healthful way of eating.

Use this guide to determine what the nutrition claims on food labels mean:

DESCRIPTION AMOUNT OF FAT/SERVING
Fat Free Less than ½ gram
Low Fat Less than 3 grams
Extra Lean Less than 5 grams
Lean Less than 10 grams
Lite/Light Half the fat of the regular product
Reduced/Less Fat 25% less fat than the regular product

top- What are some low fat ways of cooking vegetables?

There are lots of things you can do to prepare vegetables without a lot of fat. One cooking method you can use is steaming. Steaming vegetables also helps preserve the vitamin and mineral content, color, and flavor of the vegetables. Microwaving vegetables is also an excellent way to prepare vegetables. Like steaming, it allows for better retention of the color and flavor of vegetables, and because it cooks foods quickly, there is minimal loss of important vitamins and minerals. When sautéing or stir frying vegetables, you may use a small amount of water or broth instead of oil or butter. Season vegetables with your favorite spices and/or use low fat or fat free dressings and enjoy!
