Incorporating Goose grass and Bermuda grass management with renovation of seashore paspalum greens

by Dr. Joe DeFrank

Dr. Joe DeFrank made a presentation at the Landscape Industry of Hawaii Council annual 2017 meeting in Honolulu.  The same presentation was provided at the Department of Defense Pest Management Recertification class (FIFRA training) organized by Stephan Lee and held at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman.  The best parts of both of these presentation was edited into this single video with associated slide provides as a pdf.    Topics cover by Dr. DeFrank in this training class:

1. Review herbicides labeled in Seashore Paspalum

2. 2016-2017 Turf research highlights w/post and pre herbicides in S.P. greens & fairways.

3. Experimental protocol for Goose grass & B.G. management in SP greens during renovation.

Our research results provide convincing support for an experimental protocol that incorporates Bermuda grass suppression and Goose grass control with renovation of Seashore Paspalum greens. It is important to note that these procedures are NOT LEGAL in Hawaii currently (2017). We encourage turf managers and turf grass support organizations to petition chemical companies to pursue a Special Local Need Label (24c), for Hawaii only, with following label wording: “Do not apply to Seashore paspalum turf maintained at less than ˝ inch mowing height unless injury or removal of turf can be tolerated”.  Herbicide labeling that includes such wording would provide liability protection for herbicide manufactures and Hawaii’s turf managers with much need weed control tools for Seashore Paspalum greens.
