NO-TILL FARMING FOR ORGANIC GROWERS

 On December 01, 2017, Dr. Joe DeFrank presented a departmental seminar titled: No-till farming for organic growers.  This presentation began with a brief history of environmental and technological factors leading to the  development and acceptance of conventional herbicide based no-till farming in the United States.  Dr. DeFrank’s intellectual evolution in developing materials and methods of organic no-till farming included the discovery of purple nutsedge control with woven plastic fabric and the adaption of shade house construction materials for field scale use of large sheets of fabric for weed control in agricultural settings.  Laboratory exercises for the 2017 Weed Science class provided visual depictions of methods and materials used for organic no-till plantings that incorporate off site mulch production and termination of multispecies cover crops with a combination of rolling and tarping.  His presentation ended with a list of suggested future research and innovations to support the advancement of the art, science and practice of no-till organic crop production.
