Air Layering: An Old Practice with a New System for Tropical Fruits and Native Plant Preservation. - 2020
by Dr. Joe DeFrank with Roger Corrales as on site host.
Dr. Joe DeFrank made a presentation at the University of Hawaii Waimanalo Farm on 12/10/220. He discussed a new device for air layering tropical fruit trees and native Hawaiian plants located in remote mountain locations. This new air layer device allows for rooting branches and root suckers of various stem sizes. Dr. DeFrank suggested using air layered branches of mature woody fruit trees to exchange pollen for international breeding programs. Air layering root suckers of elite native Hawaiian Koa and ROD-resistant Ohia was discussed for use in developing seed nurseries in more easily accessible locations. Following the lecture/slide show, the farm crew was shown how to strip bark and cambium layer in preparation for the application of the sphagnum filled net sacks to a Guava tree.
