A natural history museum is much like a library. The specimens along with their
labels contain a wealth of information about taxonomy, evolution and ecology. We have launched a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded University of Hawai'i Insect Museum Digitization Project. This project serves not only as a mechanism for digital preservation of the irreplaceable specimen records, but also as a way to share them with the general public and other researchers from around the world. Furthermore, it allows us to pool the Museum collection with other Hawaiian insect collections from elsewhere.
Having the museum data widely available is important for use in a wide variety of studies including: monitoring the arrival of new (potentially invasive) species, the extinction and decline of native species, as well as changes over time due to the influence of global climate change, habitat destruction, and natural changes over time. Our growing online collection is hosted on the Southwest Collections of Arthropod Network (SCAN) and DigiVol (citizen-science database). For more information on the Digitization Project or how to become a volunteer and help us from your own computer, please contact: jbreil@hawaii.edu.
The University of Hawai'i Insect Museum would like to thank all of our volunteers for their valuable efforts in helping us digitize The University of Hawaii Insect Collection, which is hosted on the Atlas of Living Australia's DigiVol database. This project would not have been possible without their generousity! We like to give a special thanks and recognize our top volunteers, those who have risen above and beyond as expedition leaders!
