Definition

Alate means winged (see apterous).

Discussion

Alate insects, capable of flight, are able to actively vector plant pathogens for relatively long distances. For some vectors (i.e., aphids), the formation of alate individuals in a population or colony can be a function of the size of the population or overcrowding on the parasitized or colonized host tissues.
