Definition
Albinism is a lack of pigmentation; the plant tissue appears white.
See also: variegation.
Etymology (albino). 1777, from Sp. or Port. albino, from L. albus "white". Used by Portuguese of white-spotted African negroes. Extended 1859 to animals having the same peculiarity.
Discussion
Albinism can be the result of mutations in plant genomes, or in some cases a parasitic plant disease or phytotoxicity. Variegation (variegated) is another term used to indicate in some instances partially albino tissues on a plant.
