Definition

Coccinellidae (or coccinellids) is a family of beetles known variously as ladybirds, ladybugs or lady beetles (preferred by scientists).

Etymology. The word "lady" in the name is thought to allude to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Catholic faith.

Discussion

Ladybeetles are regarded as beneficial insects; they prey upon aphids and other important sap-feeding insects in Hawaii.
