Water soaked lesions (hyrdosis) of an Alglaonema leaf, caused by infection by the plant-pathogenic bacterium, Erwinia sp.

Definition

Hydrosis (water soaked) is a disease symptom of plants or lesions that lends a wet, dark, and usually sunken and/or translucent appearnace to the affected area.

Discussion

Hydrosis is most commonly associated with bacterial plant diseases.  Hydrosis occurs as plant cellulalar contents are released (by the processes of infection) into the intercelleular spaces.  Water-soaked plant tissue may be submitted to the test for bacterial streaming to confirm the presence of bacteria in the tissue.
