Quiscence is dormancy or extended periods of inactivity.

Discussion

Quiescence is a survival strategy for plant pathogens, especially nematodes.  It allows them to survive seasonal periods of unfavorable environmental conditions such as drought or cold temperatures or the seasonal absence of a living host plant. Usually while in a quiscent state, nematodes have reduced respiration and transpiration. Quiescence can allow plant pathogens to survive for many months or longer until conditions improve enough to allow them to resume their normal parasitic activties.
