Sunflower

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus and other species). From North & South America, sunflower is used for the large, bright showy flowers and edible seeds. The plants range from 8 feet tall in rich soil that can be used as a background or screen, to dwarf plants 2 feet high that can be used as borders or dividers.

Soil Management
Prefers deep, well drained fertile soil with organic matter.

Planting
Direct seed or transplant in full sun. Space plants 8-12 inches apart.

Irrigation
Moderate irrigation.

Insect & Disease Control
Rose beetles and powdery mildew are minor pests. Birds love the mature seeds.

Harvesting
Depending on the variety, mature seeds can be harvested in 80-100 days.
