Projects :

MAJOR EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: Extension IPM Coordinator: - Coordinate the Hawai‘i Integrated Pest Management Program that addresses the National IPM Objectives: 1) to safeguard human health and the environment, 2) to increase the range of benefits achieved by those who use IPM methods, 3) to increase the supply and dissemination of IPM knowledge, 4) to enhance collaborations among stakeholders. Quarantine Technology Transfer - Develop and coordinate origin inspection programs to minimize quarantine pests in export shipments; implement pest management practices and a postharvest hot water disinfestation treatment at farms and shipping houses in cooperation with extension agents and pest control advisors. Conduct educational workshops and demonstrations to agents, growers & shippers on quarantine disinfestation treatments. Extension Agents, Pest Control Advisors and Growers Training in Insect Pest Management - Develop pest management educational programs for ornamental crops emphasizing nonchemical control tactics and minimizing the use of chemical insecticides. Conduct cooperative projects with extension agents on biological control cultural control and chemical control of ornamental pests. Insecticide Registration - Provide chemical companies and third party registrants with efficacy and phytotoxicity data for national and special local needs registrations.

Dr. Hara has been with the University of Hawaii for over 25 years focusing on insect and mite pests of agricultural and floricultural crops, elucidating the bionomics of these pests, and developing pest management programs that minimize the use of chemical pesticides. Dr Hara innovate preharvest and postharvest control treatments in a systems approach to quarantine security for floricultural crops to meet stringent interisland, interstate and foreign quarantine regulations. Some of his research accomplishments include the development of heat treatments to control quarantine pests, including the invasive coqui frog.
