April 7, 2005 Version 2.1 of the NuMaSS Software is Available

Version 2.0 of NuMaSS was released in 2002. Release of the current version 2.1 corrects several problems we have encountered in the software during our ongoing efforts to support the adoption of NuMaSS by soil nutrient management programs of collaborators throughout the tropics.

March 31, 2005 Soil Test Kit Training Course

ISRA (L'Institut Sénégalais de Recherches Agricoles) organized a regional workshop to describe and demonstrate the effectiveness of decision support tools for farmers and extension agents in Bambey, Senegal from December 6 to 9, 2004. More than 48 participants attended. Most were extremely interested in the opportunity to learn of a more efficient and effective means of taking the guesswork out of fertilizer recommendations.

October 1, 2004 New CTO for the SM CRSP

Starting today, October 1, 2004, Dr. Michael McGahuey, Jr. is the new CTO for the Soil Management CRSP. McGahuey is a member of the Land Resources Management Team in the Natural Resources Management Office of USAID/EGAT. He has many years of experience with USAID in Sub-Saharan Africa. His email address is Mike McGahuey .

Charles Sloger
Former CTO, Dr. Charles Sloger returned to the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland. Sloger has been the CTO for the re-structured Soil Management CRSP since 1997. He has had more than 20 years of service with USAID. Earlier, he served as the AID technical officer for the NifTAL (Nitrogen-fixing Tropical Agricultural Legumes) project. In his first message to us, he’s indicated “I'm focussing on transition and on ARS - CGIAR matters.” Sloger’s new email address is Charles.Sloger@NPS.ARS.USDA.GOV. We all wish him well in his return to USDA.




September 29, 2004 SM CRSP in Angola

After months of email communications with the USAID mission in Angola, funds for field support to the mission were received as Modification #13 to the SM CRSP in early August 2004. The first task was a training course on site specific nutrient management from August 9 to 13, 2004 in Huambo. Russell Yost of the University of Hawaii and T. Jot Smyth of North Carolina State University provided that support to the mission. A more complete accounting of their activities is reported on this web site.



September 28, 2004 Cornell Success Story

Anwara grew healthy tomato seedlings using the soil solarization technology from Cornell University’s SM-CRSP project.

September 24, 2004 Jones Appointed to Technical Committee

Dr. James W. Jones of the University of Florida has accepted appointment to the 4-member Technical Committee of the Soil Management CRSP effective immediately. Jones replaces Dr. Russell Yost of the University of Hawaii after completing 2 years of service. We thank Russ for his service to the project and welcome Jim to the Committee.
