Being an Officer in the Master Gardeners

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Directors of the Hawaii Island Master Gardeners, you should start by reading about each of the roles. Then speak with any current member of the board to express your interest. New board members are nominated by a nomination committee and voted in by the full HIMGA membership.

  • The President and Secretary are elected in odd-numbered years.
  • The Vice President and Treasurer are elected in even-numbered years.
  • The Past President serves for two years.
  • All other members of the Board serve for two year terms.

The President serves as the Chair and presides at all meetings. In addition, the President has the responsibility of management and supervision of the property, business and affairs of the association. The President keeps the Board advised of all corporate business.

The Vice President performs the duties of the President when the President is absent or disabled; when the office of President is vacant the Vice President performs all duties assigned by the Board or the President.

The Secretary attends all Board meetings and records proceedings. These proceedings become the official record of the association. The Secretary, in the absence of the President and Vice President, has the power to call meetings of the Board and to preside over them.

The Treasurer takes care of money matters for the association, making deposits and disbursements for HIMGA.
