Project Name: Animal Waste Management Program in Hawaii: Implementation and Evaluation of the Modified Deep Litter System Under a Tropical Agricultural Ecosystem
ASO Log No.: 95-039
Start/End Date: October 1994 to October 1997
Federal Funds: $100,000.00

Background/
Overview:
In traditional animal waste management programs, the animal pens are washed down with water. The effluent is then contained in a lagoon which becomes a potential source of contamination to our surface waters and groundwater. These effluent lagoons are nearing capacity and have resulted in environmental violations due to effluent discharge into streams.
Objectives/Goals: To install, demonstrate, and evaluate the effectiveness of the modified deep litter system in reducing the nonpoint source pollution problem commonly associated with confined swine operations and to evaluate the effectiveness of various non-commercial and commercial carbon sources used in the modified deep litter system to transform green waste and animal waste problems into high value compost resources.
Methods Employed: • Public education and information through field demonstration days, farm tours, presentations at statewide meetings
• Data on raw materials, compost, animal performance
Pollutants of Concern: Nutrients
Watershed: South Point, island of Hawaii
Size of Project: Kealia Farms, a Naalehu farm along the Kona coast in Kealia and Naalehu towns, island of Hawaii
