Background/
Overview: |
Kaiaka – Waialua Bay is listed as a DOH Water Quality Limited
Segment due to nonpoint source pollution. State monitoring showed
that turbidity and total phosphorous levels in the bay exceeded
State Water Quality Standards. Kaiaka – Waialua Bay is approximately
1200 acres in size, and receives drainage from 70,700 acrea Kaiaka – Waialua
Hydrologic Unit Area. |
Objectives/Goals: |
Demonstrate and compare the application of various protective
covers to reduce erosion on bare soil agricultural roads; observe
the effectiveness of various cover types in suppressing weeds on
agricultural roads; and assess the potential for lowering agricultural
road maintenance costs by reducing erosion damage and the need
to apply herbicides for weed control. |
Methods Employed: |
3 road sites with normal frequency use were selected. 12 road
cover treatment options were identified as demonstration treatments
using bare control, pineapple trash, sugarcane bagasse, compost,
cover mulch, kikuyu or annual rye grass, crushed asphalt
|
Pollutants of Concern: |
