Background/
Overview:
The National Weather Service Office of Hydrologic Development is updating the rainfall frequency atlas for the State of Hawaii using archives from the National Climatic Data Center. It is found that the federal gages are sparse. It is extremely important to fill gaps in the coverage provided by the NCDC gages so that the resulting atlas will be useful and representative.
Objectives/Goals: To provide supplemental rainfall data for the National Weather Service’s update of the Rainfall Frequency Atlas for Hawaii in order to improve reliability of computer runoff models used for nonpoint source pollution prevention and control.
Methods Employed: • Compile historical rainfall records from the Hawaii State Climatic Office archives for Hawaii’s four counties
• Coordinate with the National Weather Service regarding the information to be retained and the format data to be stored
• Analyze and select records for retention. Digitize and log rainfall records for the selected data set.
• Provide digitized rainfall record for Hawaii’s four counties to the NWS
