CTAHR’s 20th Annual Awards Banquet

When the Territory of Hawai‘i’s College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts opened in 1908, faculty at the one-house “campus” outnumbered students. Today the University of Hawai‘i at Ma¯noa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) enrolls more than 800 students and conducts research, instruction, and outreach at 27 locations statewide.

At CTAHR’s 2008 Awards Banquet, we celebrate our commitment to fostering academic excellence, a diverse economy, a healthy environment, and thriving families and communities for Hawai‘i. We recognize exceptional students, faculty, and staff; honor an outstanding alumnus; and pay tribute to a friend of the college. We also mark the 20th annual CTAHR Student Research Symposium and toast the publication of Hawai‘i’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources—Celebrating the First 100 Years.

Our 2008 Outstanding Alumnus is Dr. Melvin T. Yokoyama (BS, Animal Science, 1966), a professor at Michigan State University and a leading expert in rumen microbiology, silage, and livestock waste management. The 2008 Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award recipient is Susan Matsushima, the owner and CEO of Alluvion, Inc. (Hale‘iwa). A dedicated advocate for farmers, Susan is a coordinating entrepreneur who helps a diverse group of growers bring their products to market.
