Aluminum (Al) toxicity. Soils contain up to 7% Al in the solid form. When soil pH goes down (more acidic), more Al becomes water soluble and phytotoxic. Al toxicity usually first damages the root system. Aluminum-damaged roots tend to be shortened and swollen, having a stubby appearance. Without a healthy root system, plants cannot take up water and nutrients. They starve and eventually die. |
