Hawaii
Risk Management Workshops
2009
Workshops
Federal
crop insurance, a risk management tool that enables farmers to insure
some crop yields, is currently available for Hawaii growers of macadamia
nuts, coffee, bananas, papayas and nursery. By contrast USDA revenue
insurance insures a grower’s total farm income and therefore
covers all crops. Revenue insurance is also now available in Hawaii.
Four workshops on agricultural risk, focusing in particular on the
use of the new USDA revenue insurance (called “Adjusted Gross
Revenue-Lite” insurance and often abbreviated as “AGR-Lite”)
to help producers manage risks related to their whole farm income,
will be held in January at the locations listed below.

Speakers
Featured
speakers at all workshops:
- John
Nelson,
with the Western Center for Risk Management Education at Washington
State University, will provide a good overview of what revenue
insurance is and how Hawaii growers can benefit from using it.
He is a skilled educator with considerable practical experience,
both as a farmer and a banker. He brings a unique perspective
from which to describe AGR-Lite insurance, having worked with
it for years on the mainland and also having helped lead the effort
to design Hawaii’s new program.
- Ed
Schell,
a member of the University of Hawaii - Manoa’s Business
School faculty, will present practical, focused instruction on
the farm accounting that will be required for anyone who wishes
to participate in the revenue insurance program. Ed is a popular
and effective teacher with years of experience teaching accounting
in CTAHR’s on-campus AgriBusiness program. His accounting
module for this workshop will be invaluable for all growers, whether
or not they qualify for the insurance this year.
- Bonnie
Lind,
the most active crop and revenue insurance agent in Hawaii, will
take questions about signing up. She is well known in the state
for her ability to provide useful, reliable and objective information
on the various options for growers.
After the workshops but before the March 15th sign-up deadline,
growers who have already attended one of these four workshops
and who intend to purchase the insurance for 2009 coverage,
can call upon Kent Fleming, CTAHR Extension Economist, for additional
one-on-one help in making revenue insurance planning decisions.
