Description: The Maui Agricultural Research Center, also known as Kula Experiment Station houses three environmentally controlled fiberglass greenhouses (total: 3,360 square feet); 2 fiberglass-roofed structures with open sides (total: 3,200 square feet); and a saran plastic shade house (8,000 square feet). It is the center for research on proteas and other southern hemisphere flora. For many years the Kula Station has participated as a demonstration garden for the All-American Selections by displaying their yearly rose winners.

Current activities: On going projects include propagation, nutrition, breeding, keeping quality, and marketing in cooperation with scientists from CTAHR departments at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Campus.

Description: The Magoon facility is located in the heart of Manoa. There are several greenhouses at the facility. Most are specific to one type of plant or flower -- including anthuriums and orchids. Some of Hawaii’s most beautiful and commercially viable flowering plants come out of the Magoon facility.

Current activities: Currently, research is underway involving commercial anthurium and orchid breeding. Other areas under experiment include kava, several ornamentals, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Description: The Poamoho Research station has a modest cluster of buildings. The inventory of buildings includes an office/laboratory building, general storage building, tractor/chemical storage building, cottage/storage and open storage shed.

Current activities: Research in tropical fruit trees, entomology, termites, cover crops, vegetable breeding, papaya breeding, post-harvest research, taro research. Some of the crops grown include tomato, corn, papaya, macadamia nut, avocado, green bean, mustard cabbage, bulb onion, eggplant, pineapple, sweet potato, etc.

Special events: Limited events due to terrain.

Description: The Kauai Extension and Agricultural Center located in the Wailua Homesteads has facilities to conduct field and laboratory research. Description: The Lalamilo Research Station consists of 1 cottage, 1 office/workshop, 1 garage with a storeroom, 1 greenhouse, and 1 greenhouse. The cottage and 2/3 of the office/workshop building is temporarily being used by the charter school Kanu O Ka Aina.

Current activities: Research on tea, low-chill blueberries, protea, and various vegetable crops are conducted at the Lalamilo station. The USDA Tropcial Plant Genetic Resource Management Unit maintains papaya and wax apple germplasm at this site.

Description: Mealani Experiment station consists of 1 cottage, 1 workshop/garage building (8,000 ft2), 1 office/workshop building (2,250 ft2), 1 supply storage sheds, 2 green houses (2,000 ft2 total), 6 pen wooden corral and work shed and a tea processing facility.

Current activities: Research on grass-finishing cattle, improving cattle genetics through breeding, hydroponic ginger and watercress, green tea selections, protea germplasm, sweet corn, feed corn, and lucaena are conducted at the Mealani station.

Description: The Waiakea research station consists of 1 cottage, 1 barn w/pasture (10 acres), 1 equipment garage, 1 supply room/break room, 1 garage/workshop, 3 fiberglass greenhouses (22,144 ft²), 3 polypropylene shade houses (46,960 ft²), 1 conley greenhouse (2,250 ft²), and 1 storage shed.

Current activities: Research on termites, Hawaiian endemic trees, anthuriums, dendrobiums, various tropical fruit (lychee, longan, etc), various vegetable crops (tomato, eggplant, etc.), macadamia, ginger, taro, nursery crops, and post-harvest quarantine, treatements for ornamentals are conducted at the Waiakea station. The station maintains an arboretum of tropical fruits. USDA Tropical Plant Genetic Resource Management Unit also maintains tropical fruit orchards on site.
