Extension Activities

Dr. Leary uses video extensively for extension work.

My mission is to provide services for developing novel invasive weed management techniques that improve efficacy, efficiency and safety. The satisfaction of goals and objectives are achieved when stakeholders and clients are able to immediately adopt and utilize any new developments derived from my efforts.

Waipunalei Koa Restoration Project

A 4-ha demonstration kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) suppression with imazapyr applied as low volume aerial treatments pre- and post-planting. Initiated August 2007.

Kona Hema Preserve

A 2-ha demonstration of kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) suppression with imazapyr applied as pre- and post-scarification treatments for improving koa (Acacia koa) forest regeneration. Initiated February 2008.

Manuka Natural Area Reserve

A 2-ha demonstration for demonstrating suppression of dormant fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum) with low-volume imazapyr applications. Initiated July 2008.

Fukuyama Farms

Plans to establish a 2-ha demonstration with sunnhemp (Crotolaria juncea) as an intercrop with papaya (Carica papaya) for improving weed suppression and trafficability. Initiated August 2008.

Volcano National Park

A 1-ha demonstration of kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) suppression with imazapyr and glyphosate applied as low-volume treatments. Initiated September 2008.

Kukaiou Ranch

Dr. Leary with koa

A 7-ha demonstration for creating a silvopasture system with koa corridors established by techniques in kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) suppression and soil scarification. Initiated September 2008.

Kaloko-Honokohau National Heritage Park

A 1-ha pili grass nursery to be utilized as a cultural resource on the park. Initiated November 2008.
