Background/
Overview:
Nawiliwili Bay is fed by three main streams: Huleia, Puali and Nawiliwili Streams. Currently the bay and Nawiliwili and Heleia Streams are listed as water quality impaired due to excessive turbidity. The Bay is also listed as being impaired by excessive nutrients, enterococci, and chlorophyll a. Many of the streams in this watershed drain into and cause pollution condition in the Bay. Streams, harbor sites and beaches are used by residents and tourists for many water recreational activities.
Objectives/Goals: This three-phase study will assess current pollution levels and identify sources of contamination for the Nawiliwili Watershed. It is also aimed at developing a restoration and protection plan for the watershed.
Methods Employed: • Validate and document existing environmental data (phase I)
• Identify current sources of pollution and contamination (phase II)
• Develop a restoration and protection plan for the watershed
Pollutants of Concern: Nutrients, enterococci, and chlorophyll a
