Soils and Plant Nutrient Management

Maui County 's diverse soils and climates have a large influence on crop growth and management, with implications for production, the environment and sustainability. Intensively managed land systems such as nurseries and landscapes apply large amounts of nutrients per unit land to maximize productivity and maintain product quality. A significant fraction of these nutrients are not assimilated by plants and may become pollutants of ground waters and marine systems.

CTAHR faculty work on solutions to efficient use and management of nutrients in our diverse soil and cropping systems. This information is useful to farmers, ranchers, land stewards, conservationists and home gardeners.
